Generally good. Great bar and social areas downstairs, the bartender (a Brazilian man) was incredibly friendly and positive. Rooms were clean and people were friendly. The lift consistently did not work the whole time we were there. Located right next to the station, which is great, but it isn't actually in a very nice area of Hamburg (fine if you can hop on the U/S-Bahn).
This hostel is neither terrible nor good. Some negative reviews about the dodgy area around the train station are unfair, as the hostel doesn’t control its surroundings, but it did feel almost unsafe at night. On the positive side, the staff were mostly friendly, the rooms were a good temperature, and breakfast was OK value. However, the bathrooms were comically tiny—like showering in an airplane bathroom, which was physically difficult even at 6'1". The dirty linen on my bed wasn’t changed over two nights, I saw a bloodstain on another bed, toilet paper wasn’t replaced, and my bed was extremely creaky. The only other men's bathroom on my floor was either always occupied or out of use without a sign. There was also zero social vibe. If cleanliness, good vibes, and a safe area matter to you, stay elsewhere away from the Hauptbahnhof.
